A man is fighting for life in a Brisbane hospital after being shot in the chest in a street in Maryborough on Thursday night.

Initial investigations indicate an altercation occurred between two people near Walker Street about 9.30pm during which one man sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital in a serious condition and then flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

After initially being reported to be in a serious condition, a spokeswoman from Queensland Health said later on Friday the man was now “critical but stable”.

A neighbour has spoken of the moment he heard a gunshot ring out in his Maryborough street.

Stephen Place, who lives near Walker St, said he went outside with his dog on Thursday night after the football was over.

“I heard people talking in the street,” he said.

“Then I just heard a shot and I told the dog to get inside.”

It is the second time this year Mr Place has heard shots fired near his home.

Shots were allegedly fired during an altercation in Jupiter St in May, 2022.

Police were searching the nearby park, eerily named in honour of Maryborough shooting victims William and Edith Moffat, who were killed in a home in Jupiter St in 1977.

Another couple living in the street said detectives had been at their door on Friday morning, August 19, 2022.

They said they had not heard anything and were shocked to hear what had happened so close to their home.

Another family living nearby said they had heard the sounds of an argument overnight around the time the shooting happened.

All raised concerns about the neighbourhood, saying while the shooting was unusual they had concerns about recent activity in the nearby streets.

Investigations are ongoing, with police appealing to any members of the public who may have seen or heard anything suspicious near Walker Street to contact police.

It is understood the victim is not cooperating with police.

No charges have been laid as yet and nobody has been taken into custody.
