Sprawling timber Queenslander home completely destroyed in overnight Urangan fire

Neighbours have described "popping" sounds as a ferocious fire destroyed a sprawling timber Queenslander while its “hardworking” tenants were away and their frantic pet at home. PHOTOS, VIDEO.

Neighbours have revealed the “hard working” couple who rented the sprawling timber Queenslander destroyed by fire at Urangan overnight on Thursday were not home at the time but their beloved dog was.

Most said they slept through the initial emergency, though one woke up late in the night and could hear a “banging” coming from inside as it started to go up.

As the fire took hold, parts of the building were “popping off” on the house next door, they said.

Another neighbour said his partner woke him up and said, “the house is on fire”.

They said a dog at the home ran around barking like crazy, and was covered in soot but appeared uninjured when it was collected by somebody overnight.

The large, highset home in Kings Street was completely engulfed by fire by 11.30pm, with only the scorched remains still standing on Friday morning, and a strong smell of smoke.

Four fire crews attended the fire and had it out by about 12.40am.

Fire crews worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading, and had it under control by 11.50pm, with the fire fully extinguished by 12.40am, a QFD spokeswoman said.
