With parents waiting for their children to be dropped off by a school bus, police were called as a man drove dangerously nearby, performing drifts at high speeds in a silver ute while being videoed by witnesses.
Jaydn David Ross-Williams, 26, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and failing to comply with police directions when he appeared before Hervey Bay Magistrates Court last week.
The court heard the man had no criminal history before the incident on November 20.
The court heard when police attended the scene, they were approached by a man who said he was the carer for the person they were looking for and provided the name of the defendant.
When police arrived at his home, Ross-Williams’ mother said he had just left.
While police were standing in the driveway, he drove up in the ute, performed a U-turn and drove off at speed, the court heard.
There were no registration plates on the ute.
Ross-Williams later made admissions regarding his behaviour and his state of mind at the time when police attended the home later and found him in a bedroom.
He was later charged with failing to provide his identifying particulars within the time required by police, telling officers he was suffering mental health issues.
The court heard Ross-Williams was receiving a disability support pension and had help from a support worker.
He understood his conduct was dangerous, the court was told.
Ross-Williams had been the victim of historical abuse that had made his mental health spiral, the court heard.
He was fined $1600 and disqualified from driving for six months.
No convictions were recorded.
