Man attacked by dingoes on Fraser

UPDATE: Dingoes have attacked a man on Fraser Island, leaving him with serious leg, arm and head injuries.

THE man who was attacked by dingoes on Fraser Island this morning is understood to have climbed a tree in a desperate attempt to escape the animals.

Fraser Coast Chronicle editor Peter Chapman, who is on Fraser Island, said locals feared this was the worst dingo attack in recent years.

The 23-year-old German man was camping with a group at the K'Gari Education Centre near Hope Valley, but he had fallen asleep on a side path away from the camp, when the attack occurred.

The Chronicle understands he managed to scale a tree in a bid to escape the animals, however, he sustained further injuries when a branch broke and he fell to the ground.

Mr Chapman said reports from people at the scene suggested the man's life was in serious danger during the unexpected attack.

There are unconfirmed reports up to three dingoes may have been involved.

The man suffered bites to his legs, arms and head, and was treated at the scene by the AGL Action Rescue helicopter before being airlifted to Hervey Bay hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Rangers have increased patrols on Fraser Island as a result of the incident.
