THE Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is hoping community support will assist in boosting volunteer numbers on Fraser Island.

As part of a new push to get more people involved in better managing the world-heritage-listed site, QPWS is inviting backers to lend a hand.

Peter Wright, Great Sandy operations manager for QPWS, said volunteers will assist with environmental programs and in educating tourists about dingoes.

"Volunteers help with ground maintenance at the Sandy Cape Lighthouse, assist rangers with dingo safety programs for visitors, and work on various environmental programs such as flora and fauna surveys and marine debris surveys that help protect marine life," Mr Wright said.

"QPWS is looking to involve volunteers as campground hosts, maintaining facilities and providing general assistance to visitors and this will likely see an increase in the number of registered volunteers on the island."

The invitation for people to join the volunteer programs is not limited to individuals, with community groups also being offered an opportunity to get involved and try something community minded.

Information on how to join is available from the Maryborough QPWS office, located at the corner of Lennox and Alice Sts, Maryborough.

Details are also available by telephoning 4121 1800.
