Police have revealed the theft of a car, taken when the owner was surrounded by a group of men, one of whom was armed with a machete, has been linked to several other crimes.

It comes after a number of men approached the owner of a 2014 black Nissan Navara which was parked on Eli Creek Road, Point Vernon, and demanded he hand it over on Tuesday night.

According to a police statement, the owner ran from his vehicle into nearby mangroves and saw the car being driven away.

A Queensland Police spokesperson told the Chronicle on Thursday officers believe the vehicle has since been linked to other break and enters.

“The investigation remains ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the theft of a vehicle at Point Vernon on April 12,” the spokesperson said.

“It is believed the vehicle is also linked to break and enters which occurred at two businesses in Craignish and River Heads on the evening of April 12.

“Police continue to appeal for anyone who may have seen the vehicle or has information regarding the theft to come forward.”

Police asked for the community not to approach the vehicle or occupants.
