A PROPOSED new law would leave a solitary dog as the only registered pet on Fraser Island.
Currently, dogs and cats are outlawed in the national park area of Fraser Island, however they can still be registered and kept as pets on other areas around the island.
Following recent sightings of feral cats on the island and ongoing concerns over the fate of the dingo population, the Fraser Coast Regional Council has proposed to ban all dogs and cats except for the one dog already registered there.
Council's executive manager, regulatory services, Andy Gaze said currently one dog on the island was registered with council, and no cats were registered on the island at all.
If the proposed FCRC Local Laws were gazetted, no further dogs or cats would be able to registered on the island.
The council is required to introduce its new local laws by December 30.
The final draft will be presented to Council on October 5, then if approved, will be forwarded to the Department of Local Government and Planning for the Minister's approval.
Once approved by the state government, the Local Laws would be gazetted and would become law.
