K’gari dingo attack: School boy flown to hospital with head injuries

A school-aged boy has been flown to hospital with head injuries after a dingo attack at a popular K'gari campground.

A school boy has been flown to hospital with head injuries after reportedly been bitten by a dingo near a popular campground on K’gari.

The incident has sparked an investigation by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers.

Triple 0 calls were made at 3.02pm Saturday.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said a school aged male had suffered cuts and injuries to his head from a dingo incident.

A Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation spokeswoman said about 2pm the child was approached by the dingo while on the beach with his grandfather near Coolooloi Creek, southern K’gari.

As a result a rescue chopper was called and the boy was flown to hospital for treatment

Earlier this year a number of children including a nine-year-old girl were bitten by dingos while visiting K’gari.

Visitors and residents on K’gari are reminded to remain vigilant at all times by keeping children at arm’s length, never walking alone and carrying a stick at all times.

Negative dingo encounters should immediately be reported to a QPWS ranger by calling 07 4127 9150 or emailing dingo.ranger@des.qld.gov.au.

QPWS carry out constant education and compliance activities on K’gari.

Visitors to K’gari are reminded to Be dingo-safe! at all times:

• Always stay close (within arm’s reach) to children and young teenagers

• Always walk in groups and carry a stick

• Never feed dingoes

• Camp in fenced areas where possible

• Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative dingo interaction

• Lock up food stores and iceboxes (even on a boat)

• Never store food or food containers in tents, and

• Secure all rubbish, fish and bait.
