Jake knows when to hold 'em

A HERVEY Bay student has turned his school project into a entrepreneurial venture, with the council selling his Fraser Island playing cards.

IT ISN'T every school assignment that will end up as an entrepreneurial venture.

Not many school assignments end up as an environmental awareness campaign.

And there can't be a lot of school assignments out there that end up as a game for the whole family to enjoy.

Somehow, Jake Pavey has managed to combine all three.

Jake is a year 9 student at Fraser Coast Anglican College, who was given a project to "undertake a personal challenge" of his own choosing.

Jake decided he would create something out of nothing, coming up with "the Dingo Pack" - a unique deck of cards featuring flora and fauna from Fraser Island.

After six months of work, including researching facts about the island and negotiations with local businesses, Jake unveiled the Dingo Pack yesterday.

The story doesn't end there, however.

Jake also arranged a meeting with Division 10 councillor George Seymour, to ask if the cards could be sold at the council's Visitor Information Centres.

Cr Seymour said he was delighted to oblige.

With educational information as well as bright pictures of plants, animals and landmarks of Fraser Island on the cards, Cr Seymour said the Dingo Packs were an excellent opportunity to market the island.

Jake said his love of Fraser Island was behind his idea.

"It's a great way to learn about Fraser Island in a fun, easy way," he said.

He said the cards can be used in seven different games of varying levels of difficulty, with instructions provided with the purchase.

The Dingo Packs are on sale at the Visitor Information Centres across the region for $12 each.

A percentage of each sale will be donated to the Oceania Project and Save The Fraser Island Dingos.

Jake said he had not received his mark from school for the assignment yet, but he was hoping for an A+.
