A courageous mum who fought every step of the way for more time with her beloved husband and children has lost her battle with breast cancer.
Hervey Bay’s Brandi Allsop told her devastating story to the Chronicle in 2024, as she shared how she was forced to raise tens of thousands of dollars to fund a treatment to help keep her alive.
At just 39, the mother of two had been fighting triple negative breast cancer for three years when she found out it had returned last year.
To give herself the best chance, she needed Lynparza (Olaparib), a drug that targets BRCA gene mutations, to continue but the drug is incredibly expensive and not covered by the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), meaning her family needed to find an extra $78,000 a year for her treatment.
Fighting not only for herself but women everywhere, Brandi petitioned for the Australian government to list the drug on the PBS to make it accessible to those in need.
To fight her cancer, Brandi also underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy, one immunotherapy, 30 days of radiation, and eight surgeries.
“When people say they would die for their children, I ask, imagine fighting to live for them,” she said.
“That is what I have been faced with doing for nearly three and a half years. Fighting to stay alive to raise my boys and watch them grow up.”
Brandi’s petition has so far attracted more than 26,000 signatures.
Her husband Shane and two sons, Cody and Jack, were her world.
On Monday, as news of her death was shared, tributes flooded in remembering her positive spirit and commitment to those she loved.
One tribute cane from Brow Republic & Lash Bar, where Brandi was a beloved customer.
“Brandi was one of our earliest clients when we first opened our doors,” the post read.
“Over time, she became not only a familiar face but a true friend — someone we laughed with, shared stories with, and eventually welcomed into our team as a Christmas casual.
“She brought warmth, strength, and resilience to every space she entered — even while fighting a long and courageous battle with cancer.
“Brandi passed away yesterday, leaving behind two beautiful young boys and her husband Shane. Our hearts are with them, and with all who knew and loved her.
“To us, she’ll always be remembered for her kindness, her smile, and her determination. She will forever be part of our story, and we are so grateful she was part of our journey.
“Rest peacefully, Brandi. You’ll always be remembered, and deeply missed.”
Beck Eldridge said it was important the community continue Brandi’s fight.
“Brandi was a beautiful, strong woman with a heart of gold,” she wrote.
Bri Veenhuizen said Brandi was the “sweetest woman I’ve ever met”.
“I can’t believe she’s gone,” she wrote.
“My heart aches for her boys and Shane.”
