The Glenwood Rural Fire Brigade are searching for a “Good Samaritan” after an individual generously paid for a fire service vehicle’s fuel last week.
Rural firefighter Roy Nicholls tried to pay for fuel at the Glenwood Service Station on Monday afternoon with the service’s fuel card which declined, and he was not carrying any other form of payment.
A Facebook post said Mr Nicholls was filling up a Command Support Vehicle, an integral asset when communicating with multiple brigades during large bushfires.
A bystander who watched the incident play out told the volunteer firefighter they would pay for the fuel “without hesitation”.
Officer Nicholls declined the selfless gesture and headed back to the fire brigade on foot to grab another form of payment, but was told the fuel had already been paid for when he got back.
“There are a lot of good people out there,” he said.
“To do what he did was unnecessary, but it shows that they appreciate us and what we do out here.”
Queensland rural fire services are made up of about 28,000 volunteers, according to the Qld Fire Service, meaning many go without praise for their courage and willingness to serve their community.
The incident comes at a time when Wide Bay and Burnett residents should be increasingly wary of fire dangers as the warmer months approach.
“During bushfire season, your safety depends on your preparations and the decisions you make,” Officer Nicholls said.
“Make your bushfire plan now and know exactly what you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your property.”
The fire service are searching for the mystery person so they can personally thank him and reimburse him for the funds used in the transaction.
