It might have been a bit chilly, but that didn’t stop the families of Maryborough from turning out in force to celebrate the grand opening of SplashSide water park.
Haze and Ray Fox were among the first youngsters to jump under the water jets at the new park.
Mum Katelyn Fox thought the weather would be too cold, with one of the kids dressed in trackies.
But when they got to the park, the boys were keen to brave the weather for a chance to enjoy the day.
Ms Fox said when it came to a comparison between Hervey Bay’s WetSide water park and Maryborough’s new facility, the Heritage City had the Bay beat.
She said it was great to see the park located in a space where families could also enjoy play equipment and nearby barbecues.
Rhiannon Stergert, sitting at the park with her daughter Indianna, said the kids were having a great time, while Katherine Read said her children, Aaliah and Josiah, were having a blast.
The new facility includes a range of features such as sensory wall, inclusive orbit element, a spoon full of sugar discharge bucket, a trampoline, waterfall, crystal fountains and a hammock.
Other features will include stream jets, a roller slide, cosmic cannons, spray jets, sugar cane spray poles, a new shelter with a barbecue, and improved amenities.
Plenty of dignitaries were on hand for the grand opening, including Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour and Councillors, including Denis Chapman, Jade Wellings and Paul Truscott.
Councillor Daniel Sanderson said it was an occasion he would always remember.
“I remember the moment I was able to announce we will build a new water playground in Maryborough,” he said.
“This is a project years in the making and one which I have always passionately advocated for and have never given up on.
“I’m incredibly grateful for this day and every day to come and look forward to seeing so many amazing memories and moments created in this fantastic facility.”
