Fraser Island’s tracks battered by storms and flooding

IT WILL take more than 3000 tonnes of gravel to repair the Hook Point inland track on Fraser Island after it was battered by storms and flooding.

IT WILL take more than 3000 tonnes of gravel to repair the Hook Point inland track on Fraser Island after it was battered by storms and flooding.

The track is one of several roads between the east coast of the island and barge landings on the west coast that were damaged by ex-tropical cyclone Oswald.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Fraser Coast area manager Ross Belcher said tracks to barge landings were given priority for repairs soon after Oswald passed through but were now being reassessed for damage after more wild weather earlier this week.

"We expect that the most used tracks will remain open, and any tracks that need to be closed will be repaired and open later this week," he said.

For Hook Point Rd, this week's weather has pushed back plans to repair the stretch between the 11km beach access and 18km beach access with new gravel.

The section between the two points of access has been closed until further notice.

Drivers are still able to drive on Hook Point Rd up to the 11km beach access point and should plan their travel for low tide, Mr Belcher said.

About five tracks on the island remain closed.
