First whales of the season spotted near Fraser Island

THE first whales for the 2016 season have been spotted off Fraser Island.
Fraser Coast Opportunities announced the news via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon at about 1.45pm.
Tas Webber from FCO said some visitors spotted the whales off shore from Happy Valley.
"They saw some tail flaps and that sort of thing," Mr Webber said.
He said the whales heading north as part of their annual migration.
"They are a little early for their northern migration," he said.
"usually we start to see them around the end of April or the beginning of May."
Whale season on the Fraser Coast does not begin until mid-July when the giant mammals visit Hervey Bay as part of their southern migration
The season usually continues through until late October.
Mr Webber said given the early signs of a northern migration, he hoped the southern migration would also start earlier.
Last year about 8000 whales visited the region.
