A JUVENILE humpback whale seen lazily making its way through the top of the bay this morning is the first to be spotted by whale-watching operators for the 2012 season.
Whalesong Cruises spotted the humpback lunchtime today on its Whale Search and Dolphin Watch cruises, which began running on Saturday.
More than 14,000 whales are expected to travel past Fraser Island in their annual migration back to Antarctica and will begin to arrive in big numbers by the end of the month.
Whalesong was the first to launch cruises for the season, with other operators launching from July 21-July 28.
Owner Virginia Brigden said tourists on the cruise had been very excited to spot the juvenile whale and believed it was an optimistic sign for this year's migration.
"It is the start of things to come," she said.
She said the boat would not go out tomorrow due to bad weather forecasts.
"There is still the chance it will be hit and miss."
