CONTROVERSIAL fencing to keep dingoes out of Fraser Island's K'Gari campground has angered Butchulla elders.
Work on the $250,000 project has begun with expectations it will be completed by the Christmas holidays.
Aunty Marie Wilkinson, a Butchulla elder, has labelled the 1.8m-high fence an insult to the Butchulla.
"Those are Aboriginal people there," Aunty Marie said.
"They're fencing them in - are we going back to the early days now?
"That's what it amounts to and they're using the dingo as an excuse to (fence us in).
"I would like to see them pull the fence down, it's an insult to our people.
"Are they going to fence everybody in over there?"
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service area manager Fraser Coast Bart Klekar confirmed most sections of the 800m long fence had now been built.
He said the fence was built after consultation with campground management.
"After extensive consultation with K'Gari campground management, it was agreed that QPWS would build a dingo fence around the facility to improve the public's safety," Mr Klekar said.
"With favourable weather, we are looking to have the fence finished by the start of the Christmas school holidays.
"Dingo fences have been very successful in providing visitor safety at other island campgrounds such as Dundubara and Central Station."
