Emergency services have raced to the scene after a scooter’s lithium battery started exploding in a Hervey Bay backyard on Tuesday.

Hervey Bay firefighter and station officer Shane Charman said two crews had attended the scene at Caddy Ave in Urraween after the triple-0 call, which was made about 3.08pm.

He said on arrival the crews had been smoke coming from the backyard and traced it to the lithium battery of the scooter, which also resulted in a series of small explosions.

The crews extinguished the flames and worked to make the area safe, Mr Charman said.

A spokeswoman from the Queensland Ambulance Service said the eight people at the house had been assessed by paramedics.

The five children at the scene were uninjured, she said.

A woman in her 60s was assessed for an eye injury but did not require transport to hospital.

A man in his 50s was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with burns and to be treated for smoke inhalation.

He was transported in a stable condition.
