Fraser Coast Dunga Derby teams on track to raise almost double the funds from last year.
Crews are currently on the road and the four-day event will end this Sunday, August 1 as more than 80 cars finish up at the Hervey Bay Seafront Oval during the Whale Festival at about 4.30pm.
About 55 cars are being driven by Fraser Coast participants while another 27 are from Sunshine Coast teams – doing “a double dunga”.
Another 20 support vehicles, alongside two tow trucks, are also tagging along on the trip, holding medical professionals, mechanics and others who might be needed during the ride.
The three teams of mechanics are referred to as “The Greased Monkey’s”.
Rally for a Cause committee member Mick Irwin told the Chronicle there had been a few car troubles but the mechanics had so far managed to keep everyone on the road and running.
“We’ve got about 350 people, and we’ve had lots of little incidents, little breakdowns, had lots of cars on the sides of the road but all the teams come together and help to get all the cars moving … it’s awesome,” he said.
“Last year‘s event we raised $260,000, this year, we’ve raised $400,000 in the Fraser Coast for our local families.”
