A man who smashed and damaged two cars while drunk in Hervey Bay has been sentenced in court.
Richard Field pleaded guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court to two charges of wilful damage for the two incidents on May 14 with both happening in Cypress Street, Torquay.
Police Prosecutor Louese McConnell said the first incident happened about 2am where Field approached a gold Toyota Land Cruiser and smashed the windscreen with an unknown object causing $330 worth of damage.
Ms McConnell said shortly after that Field smashed a second vehicle’s windscreen.
“He stood beside the drivers side and raised his arm, a witness has come out after hearing the earlier smash and said to Field, ‘don’t you dare’,” she said.
Field then smashed the windscreen and proceeded over the road to a derelict building.
In court, Field said he was drunk at the time of the incidents and apologised for taking up the court’s time.
Magistrate Stephen Guttridge took into account Field’s early pleas of guilty and said while being intoxicated at the time explained his actions, being drunk was not an excuse for his actions.
Magistrate Guttridge imposed one fine for both offences, convicting and fining Field $800 and he was ordered to pay $330 restitution for the first offence.
