THE Fraser Coast may never know the origin of a dingo pup that was found wandering through bushland last month.
The Department of Environment and Resource Management has said DNA testing may not provide a definitive answer on whether the dingo may have been taken from Fraser Island.
The dingo was delivered to the TESS Wildlife Sanctuary in early January, where curator Ray Revill recognised characteristics consistent with pure-bred dingos from Fraser Island.
The sanctuary is still awaiting results from Biosecurity Queensland as well as their own independent DNA test.
Department of Environment and Resource Management regional manager for the Great Sandy Region Ross Belcher said cross-bred wild dogs were common in the Maryborough area.
"If anyone has further information about the pup, DERM will investigate," Mr Belcher said.
TESS Wildlife Sanctuary has applied to keep the dingo.
Staff have planned to call on the public to name it after it has made a full recovery.
The dingo pup was less than a year old and malnourished when it was caught.
