A tourist has witnessed a dingo stealing a quick meal from a crab pot only to almost lose its lunch to a hungry sea eagle.
Alexandra Rietmeyer was in a yacht anchored off Fraser Island with her partner when he noticed the dingo going for a feed.
“He said to me ‘you won’t believe this, but there’s a dingo raiding the crab pot’.”
A keen photographer, Alexander started taking snaps when suddenly a sea eagle swooped, trying to get some food for itself.
Alexander just happened to snap a photo of the moment it happened.
“I caught the photo by accident trying to get the dingo in the crab pot,” she said.
What followed was something of a comedy, with the sea eagle continuing to swoop to try to get a piece of the food and the dingo leaping out of the air, trying to add the eagle to its meal.
In the end the eagle flew off and the dingo got to keep its morsel.
Eventually, the owner of the crab pot came back and Alexandra told him his chance for a crab dinner had been quashed by a dingo.
He joked he would be able tell his partner he wasn’t out getting drunk, a dingo had raided his crab pot.
Alexandra, a founder of Daintree Wildlife Rescue, has documented some quirky animal interactions over the years but said “my God, now I’ve seen it all”.
