A DINGO care centre could be opened on Fraser Island in the near future thanks to Save Fraser Island Dingoes.
Designs have already been made for the interior and the group has already put out a call for volunteers for the centre, SFID secretary Karin Kilpatrick said yesterday.
The group held a meeting with Environment Minister Andrew Powell and the department's director-general on Sunday about the possibility of the centre, modelled on a similar centre in the Atherton Tablelands.
Ms Kilpatrick said vets and other environmental groups such as Animal Australia had thrown their support behind the centre.
She estimated it would cost up to $100,000 to build the centre, which would be met through fundraising. The group would also look to raise money for a hospital vehicle equipped with veterinary equipment.
Mrs Kilpatrick said the centre would be used to care for other wildlife such as injured birds and turtles.
