THE first cruise from Urangan marina to Fraser Island for more than a year set off on Saturday night and another will follow this weekend.

Hervey Bay Whale Watch owners Brian and Jill Perry said the family run business had partnered with Kingfisher Bay Resort to trial the new dinner cruises until November, when they may introduce a second weekly cruise on the Quick Cat II.

Mr Perry said feedback from the maiden cruise had been extremely positive.

"They're all very happy the cruises are being run out of the marina again," Mrs Perry said.

Regular trips between the marina and the island stopped in January 2010 after Kingfisher Bay Resort moved its terminal to River Heads.

Urangan Marina visitor numbers plummeted following the terminal move, but the new cruises could help boost them back up.

The cruises, which include dinner at Kingfisher Bay Resort, will leave each Saturday at 5.30pm and leave the island at 9.30pm.

"They will eventually be sunset cruises," Mr Perry said.
