‘Very suspicious’: Possible crocodile spotted in Howard Weir, Qld

Experts are being asked to weigh in on a photo which sparked a warning about a possible crocodile at a weir more than 200km south of traditional croc country.

A shock possible crocodile sighting has been reported at Howard Weir on the Fraser Coast, drawing a mixed reaction after a photo was shared on social media.

Elizabeth Chaffey shared the photo to Facebook community pages, telling people her family “may” have seen a crocodile at the weir on the Burrum River.

“It was very suspicious but it looked like it, just a warning,” she wrote.

“It didn’t move but I said to the kids maybe no swimming today.”

The reaction on social media was mixed, with some agreeing it could be a crocodile, but others saying it looked more like a log.

Julienna Wilson said Ms Chaffey had made a good decision to alert people.

“I have seen a saltwater croc near Double Island Point a few years ago, he was huge,” she wrote.

“He most definitely looked like it was a log until we got the binoculars out and confirmed our suspicions.

“We sat and watched him go for a swim and come up again to the surface.

“When I visit Rainbow Beach and drive along the beach I’m always on the lookout for crocodiles.

“Seems weird, yes I know, but I guess you really had to witness it yourself.

“My father was gobsmacked as he lived in Rainbow Beach for many years and had never, ever seen a crocodile up that way until that day.”

A Environment and Science Department spokesperson said there had been no reported crocodile sightings in that area.

“The post mentions that it wasn’t moving, so we don’t believe it fits croc behaviour, however if we do receive any reports we will investigate immediately,” she said.

It come as a realistic fake crocodile head was placed in Ululah Lagoon in Maryborough’s Anzac Park, with an image being shared to Facebook.

One commenter said it had been there for several weeks.

Another woman took photos as it had “really startled” her.
