Campers battle through bush

TWO British tourists got into a spot of bother when they lost their map and compass on Fraser Island on Tuesday.

TWO British tourists got into a spot of bother when they lost their map and compass on Fraser Island on Tuesday.

The pair arrived on the western side of the island on Monday and walked from Kingfisher Bay Resort to Lake McKenzie, where they set up camp for the night.

But late on Tuesday they contacted a friend to say they had become lost somewhere between Duck Creek and Bennett Creek while navigating the trek back to Kingfisher.

The friend then called police to report that the two men were lost on the island, but he said they planned to camp for the night as they still had water, a flashlight, extra clothing and camping gear with them.

He said they wanted to wait until morning to once again attempt to make their way back to Kingfisher.

The phone signal had dropped out before he was able to get any further details, the friend told police when they went to meet with him at the River Heads boat ramp on Tuesday night.

Police yesterday had begun to make plans in case a search and rescue mission was required, but the two disorientated tourists arrived safely back at Kingfisher about 10.30am yesterday.

They had not suffered any injuries as a result of their detour.
