On of Hervey Bay’s top whale watching experiences is entering a new era, with the owners of Whalesong Cruises, the Greenshields family, announcing the sale of their family-run business to new owner and skipper, Ben Duffy.
After more than seven years of operating the award-winning Whalesong Cruises, Bec and Doug Greenshields — along with John and Lexie — are stepping back from the day-to-day running of the business, leaving behind a legacy of outstanding marine tourism and deep community connection.
It comes after the business won Business of the Year at the Fraser Coast Tourism Awards in 2022 and last year the team won marine tourism awards.
The Greenshields family will remain in Hervey Bay for the foreseeable future and plan to stay involved during the current whale watching and upcoming summer seasons to ensure a smooth transition for Mr Duffy.
“We’re excited to share that our much-loved family-owned marine tourism business is entering a new chapter,” a post on Whalesong’s Facebook page read.
“We have a new owner at the helm: Ben Duffy – a passionate and highly experienced business owner and captain.
“As a veteran and long-time fishing charter operator, Ben shares our deep love for the ocean and commitment to unforgettable guest experiences.
“With years on the water and a connection to our coastal community, he brings not only strong leadership but also a heartfelt respect for the values Whalesong Cruises was built on.
“Rest assured, the friendly faces, outstanding service, and magical moments you’ve come to expect will continue — unchanged and unwavering. We’re proud to say the heart of Whalesong remains the same.”
The post said it was a bittersweet moment for the Greenshields family.
“To our loyal guests and community: a heartfelt thank you for being part of our journey,” the post read.
“With innumerable experiences had and opportunities given over this time, we leave with so many incredible memories – too many to put in words.
“You’ll see us around this whale watching season, and commencement of the summer season, to ensure a smooth transition for Ben.
“Once again, thanks to everyone for your support over the years.
“Please join us in wishing Ben all the best as he continues the legacy that is Whalesong Cruises Hervey Bay.”
