TWO old bus stop shelters - one from outside the Maryborough High School and one from Gaynor St - are being given a new lease of life as team shelters on the sidelines at the Maryborough soccer grounds.

As bus shelters are upgraded across the region to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, the old shelters are being given to community and sporting groups to be re-used rather than be destroyed, councillor Trevor McDonald said.

He said four shelters from Hervey Bay were heading to the Maryborough Softball grounds, one had gone to the Hervey Bay Rugby Union grounds and others were earmarked for the Maryborough Hockey grounds and Seagulls home ground.

More would go to parks and reserves across the region.

"The project is being subsidised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads as part of the Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Program," Cr McDonald said.

"Council upgraded 10 bus shelters in Hervey Bay and Maryborough as part of the program this financial year."

Last year, the council replaced 30 bus shelters across the Fraser Coast to bring them in line with the current standards.

Councillor Daniel Sanderson said reusing the shelters was a great idea.

"Sports are growing right across the Fraser Coast," he said.

"I am really pleased that we were able to help the groups as we aim to get more people involved in sporting activities and healthy lifestyles."

G. James Glass and Aluminium was awarded the tender to design and construct the new shelters and council crews are carrying out the installation.
