Boaties warned to watch out for flood debris

BOATIES should watch for debris, including pontoons and large logs, while out on Hervey Bay waters, warns the Volunteer Marine Rescue.

HERVEY Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue has warned boaties to continue to be aware of debris in the water, including pontoons that broke free and floated across to Fraser Island.

Large logs and other debris such as pylons, pontoons and general waste have been circulating the river and bay system since the floods last month.

VMR Commodore Tom Hudson said the environment was slowly returning to normal.

"The water is starting to clear up and the debris is floating away," Mr Hudson said.

He also said stray pontoons were floating in the water near Kingfisher Bay on Fraser Island.

"We've secured them so hopefully they haven't drifted away," he said.

"If anybody has lost one floating down the Mary River, that's where it'll be."

Mr Hudson stressed the importance of skippers being vigilant.

"My message to boaties is be aware."
