Big smiles: Fraser Coast prep students celebrate first day

Wearing name badges and decked out in school uniform, Prep students across the Fraser Coast have walked into their classrooms for the first time on Monday morning.
At Tinana State School, the three Prep classes were already hard at work, with the creative youngsters quick to get tucked in to a range of activities.
Education Minister Grace Grace said Queensland schools were welcoming almost 875,000 students through the gates to start the school year.

“More than 571,000 students will attend Queensland’s 1262 state schools in 2023,” Ms Grace said.
“They will be guided by more than 55,000 teachers and 19,000 teacher aides from Day 1.
“I’d like to give a special shout out to 44,000 new preppies who are starting their very first day of school too.”
Police have also reminded motorists to take care, especially in school zones, as students returned to classrooms.
With the 2023 road toll reaching 299, the highest number in the past decade, Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream pleaded with drivers to obey the rules so everyone, especially children, could get home safely.
“Always be aware of the speed limits and your surroundings when travelling through school zones, as some of the commuters include children crossing the road on their way to, or from, school,” Mr Stream said.
“Last year’s lives lost reached a record we did not want and this year, I hope to see more safe driving practiced.
“School speed zones are in place to protect our children, who are not as familiar with the roads as we are and motorists can expect to see police out enforcing the reduced speed limits.
“Please be patient as you drive and if you live near a school zone, leave a few minutes earlier to account for the lower speeds.”
