Are feral cats on Fraser Island?

FRASER Coast councillor Sue Brooks has told ABC Radio that feral cats have been photographed on Fraser Island.

FRASER Coast councillor Sue Brooks has told ABC Radio that feral cats have been photographed on Fraser Island.

If true, the delicate ecosystem on the island now hangs in the balance as the cats are such efficient hunters and wildlife on the island would be unused to their type of predation.

Ms Brooks says the cats have been photographed by motion detection cameras on the island.

"I would imagine they’ve come over from people taking domestic cats to the island," Ms Brooks said.

"They’d be eating small reptiles and marsupials, and I’m sure they’ll be having a very negative impact on the native fauna of the island."
