PARENTS are being given a glimpse of what Brisbane’s first high-rise high school will look like, with the release of concept drawings for the new Inner City North State Secondary College.
Construction is due to begin later this year on the vertical high school, to be built on the old Fortitude Valley State School site on Brookes St.
The school will take enrolment pressure off Kelvin Grove State College, which is currently over capacity, with more than 3000 students.
Education Minister Grace Grace said the Fortitude Valley school would be a game- changer and remained on track to open its doors to senior students from 2020.
“It will be the first high school to be built in inner Brisbane in more than 50 years, and it will be our first ever vertical school,” Ms Grace said.
“The new secondary school will completely revitalise this area of Fortitude Valley, with a contemporary new vertical building and the refurbishment of the old school building.”
An expressions of interest campaign for the final design and construction contract began last week, but the school’s catchment details are yet to be finalised.
Local residents are invited to attend an information session today at the Holy Trinity Church Hall on Brookes St between 2-4pm.
The Inner North State Secondary College is one of two high schools to be built by the State Government in the inner suburbs, with a final location for the Inner South State Secondary College yet to be chosen.
Initial scoping work by the State Government has identified the Dutton Park Ecosciences precinct as the preferred site for the southside school, but some local residents are lobbying for it to be on the West End peninsula.
