Queensland’s bout of cold weather continues, with Sunday being the coldest morning of the year for several areas.

Temperatures dropped well below zero and cold winds sent the apparent temperatures as low as -7.9C.

Among the areas recording the coldest morning of the year were Oakey (-3.9C), Kingaroy (-3.8C), Amberley (-0.1C) , Mount Isa (2.3C) and Brisbane (7.7C). For Kingaroy it was the coldest morning since 2019 while Amberley was 7 degrees below average.

The Darling Downs and Granite Belt region saw the coldest temperatures overnight, with Wellcamp Airport recording the lowest temperature for the day with -4C at 5.55am.

Slightly warmer, Oakey dipped to -3.9C just after 6am but its apparent or “feels like” temperature reached a blistering -7.9C.

Sub-zero apparent temperature readings were seen in several areas as chilly winds made it feel even colder than it was.

Also recording actual temperatures below zero were Kingaroy (-3.8C at 6.31am), Applethorpe (-3C just after 6am), Dalby (-2.4C at 6.38am), Warwick (-2.7C at 7.22am), Roma (-2.6C at 6.41am), Charleville (-2C at 6.41am), Miles (-1.6C at 6.32am) and Amberley in the southeast (-0.1C at 7.03am).

Canungra in the southeast recorded a low of 0C at 6.41am.

Also in the southeast, Greenbank recorded a low of 0.6C at 6.41am while Gatton was 1.1C at 6.40am, Beaudesert was 2.4C at 6.46am, Brisbane dipped to 7.7C (6.52am), Brisbane Aiport hit 6.9C (7.05am), Gold Coast Seaway’s low was 8.3C (5.31am) and Sunshine Coast Aiport dipped to 9.9C at 4.35am.

Senior BoM Meteorologist Dean Narramore said the freezing apparent temperatures were “all to do with wind chill”.

“When the wind blows across exposed skin, it pulls the heat away from your body,” he explained.

He said that the chilly temperatures Queensland has seen over the weekend will start to ease throughout the week.

“[Sunday] will be the coldest night of the week,” he said.

“We should still see a frosty morning on Monday but temperatures will warm up through the week.”

Mr Narramore also said that some cloud and showers can also be expected through eastern Queensland mid-week.

Mostly sunny conditions are expected across the state’s southeast on Sunday with maximum temperatures in the low 20s.

Brisbane is likely to be cloudy with maximum temperatures touching the mid-20s early this week, while the minimums will mostly be in the low double digits, before showers return on Wednesday.
