Family of baby Mia would need to quarantine to attend funeral after coming from hotspots

Family members of baby Mia who tragically died following a magpie attack on Sunday would have to endure quarantine before being allowed to attend her funeral due to their living in NSW Covid hotspots.

The family of baby Mia who want to travel from New South Wales into Queensland for her funeral are in hot spots and wouldn’t be able to attend without quarantining, the chief health officer has revealed.

The five-month-old died after her mother fell while carrying her after trying to protect her from a swooping magpie in Glindemann Park at Holland Park West on Sunday.

Parents Simone Francis and Jacob Power have been left shattered by the death of their little girl who was perfect “from her head full of hair, to her tiny little nose and her little long toes”.

Their distraught family members were on Tuesday looking to gain an exemption to get into Queensland to be by their sides.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young confirmed the family had requested to come into Queensland but she said they lived in hotspots.

“Without breaching (privacy on) where they live, they currently all live in hotspots that are significant hotspots (in other parts of Australia),” Ms Young said.

“You’ve just heard me go through how many people are still testing positive day 10 or 11, what if these people test positive on day 10 or 11 and the funeral was day eight?” she said.

“It’s really sad. I cannot imagine the distress and the awfulness of it.

“That park is quite close to where I live. I know it well.

“It is an absolutely, tragic, terrible situation. But I can’t make it even more tragic by having someone go to a funeral and spread the virus at that funeral. No one would want that. It is awful, it is a terrible situation.”
