An embattled Tasmanian Liberal politician has been charged with firearm offences by Queensland Police while in the state receiving mental health assistance.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein on Friday revealed Adam Brooks, who was set to be elected following last week’s election, had resigned from the Liberal party after being charged with firearm offences and another charge relating to a “document” by Queensland Police.

Queensland Police confirmed a 45-year-old Tasmanian man had been charged after a warrant was executed at a Redcliffe property on Wednesday night.

Police allege they located a handgun and a false driver’s licence at the Marine Parade address.

The man has been charged with one count each of Unlawful possession of a Category H weapon, unauthorised possession of explosives and dealing with identity documents.

He has been released on bail with strict conditions and will face Redcliffe Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 18.

Police also flagged that investigations were ongoing and further charges are expected.

The embattled Mr Brooks has been accused of using false identities on dating websites, including the alleged use of a fake Victorian driver’s licence and conducting relationships under the name of “Terry” while claiming to be an engineer living in Melbourne.

Mr Brooks has denied all accusations.

He is also facing ammunitions charges in Tasmania.

Mr Gutwein revealed Mr Brooks had been in Queensland receiving mental health treatment.

The Premier said his soon-to-be MP in the division of Braddon had been unwell but was getting support in the Sunshine State.

Mr Gutwein led the Tasmanian Liberals to an election win last Saturday, claiming 13 out of the 25 lower house seats.

Under Tasmania’s Hare-Clarke electoral system, Mr Brooks resignation will spark a recount in the division of Braddon and another Liberal candidate will take his spot.
