AROUND 70 Extinction Rebellion activists on bicycles yelling “wake up” have taken to the Brisbane CBD streets during peak-hour this morning.
The group took off from Kurilpa Park around 7.30 this morning and blocked major CBD roads as they rode.
Two protesters were removed from the road for disobeying police orders, while a fellow protester yelled “f***ing pigs.”
However, no arrests have been made yet.
An Extinction Rebellion spokesperson said the plan was to ride to Parliament House before staging a “die in” at King George Square.
The group have vowed to continue their disruptive protests demanding action on climate change.
“It (riding a bike) also bypasses the traffic stoppages that are set to get more frequent as our politicians fail to take necessary action on climate change,” the group said in a statement.
Greens candidate for Brisbane Lord Mayor Kath Angus took part in this morning’s protest action, although she said she is not a member of Extinction Rebellion.
“I’m really passionate about active transport. I’m a cyclist and I’ve had a lot of critical incidents so I think it’s really important that we draw attention to the lack of safety in the city,” she said.
“I’ve come along to be an advocate for cycling and support some real action because I think that 20 years of being polite hasn’t done anything and personal action isn’t enough.”
