An elderly man has been rushed to hospital, suffering serious burns after a fire broke out on the back verandah of a Gold Coast property.

Emergency services were called to Ingles Circuit in Arundel at about 2:50pm where a small fire entered the ceiling space on the verandah.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said the home was not well involved and crews were able to extinguish the fire before it spread from the verandah.

Paramedics assessed two patients in their 70s on scene, including one man who was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries and a woman who did not require transportation.

Two fire crews remained on scene as of 3:45pm where they continued to make the area safe.
