Hundreds of racing fans have joined family and friends, in paying tribute to the 41-year-old. A friend of Mr Savage said on Sunday the 41-year-old was a “family man”.

“He’s one of the kindest people that anyone will come across. He’s a family man,” they said.

Another close friend described Mr Savage as a great dad who would always spend lots of time kicking the footy with his youngest son.

“He was a great dad. He’s a bit of a local legend, everyone knows him. He’s a proper person, always gives you a big hug when he sees you. He’s a good man,” they said.

“Everyone’s just heartbroken, especially me for his family at the moment.

“I am not sure how to come to terms with it myself.

“He would give everybody a hug. He genuinely cares about people. He’d look you in the eye and say ‘are you alright mate?’.”

In a post to social media, friend Brad Peers says “he was the most straight forward, loyal person I have ever known” describing him as “a great man that will be missed”.

Among the growing number of tributes posted online, family friend Tom Velic said Shane was “a beautiful soul”. “Always a smile, he would always say hi wave as I drove past. Just a really nice all around guy that will be deeply missed” he said.

The friend said they hoped the whole community would get together to support the family.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to assist Workplace Health and Safety with investigations.
