A Brisbane man has been refused bail after allegedly bashing his heavily pregnant partner who was seen trying to escape a car being driven erratically over the Gateway Bridge.

Police pulled in front of a white sedan at Belmont just after noon on Friday to find a woman with a swollen lip and blood over her face.

She was 33 weeks pregnant.

A concerned motorist had alerted police after spotting the couple driving southbound on the Gateway Motorway from Nudgee.

“The innocent bystander then observed the vehicle driving erratically as the male driver was (allegedly) using his right closed fist to strike the female multiple times in the face,” magistrate Suzette Coates read from police records.

The witness continued to update police as the car continued south over the Gateway Bridge.

“The front passenger door was reportedly opened with the female attempting to exit the vehicle for about 30 seconds,” Ms Coates said.

“It was because of the witness’s fear for the woman that she continued to follow the vehicle.”

The witness followed the car as it exited the motorway at Belmont where they were met by police.

“The police blocked the vehicle and observed the male driver erratically flailing his hands in the air and hitting the roof of the vehicle,” Ms Coates said.

“The observations of the officers were the aggrieved was observed to have blood over her face and jumper, and a swollen lip that was bleeding due to a cut or abrasions.

“She was observed to be sweating, red in the face and scared.”

Ms Coates said the man couldn’t be questioned by police as he appeared under the influence of drugs.

The man was charged with breaching a domestic violence order and stayed in the Wynnum watch house overnight before facing Brisbane Arrest Court via video on Saturday.

Legal Aid lawyer Bill Siganto said the Deception Bay man “strongly denied the accusations” and would contest the charge.

He said the man, in his 30s was the main breadwinner for his pregnant partner and her two young children.

The offer to wear a GPS tracker and reside at his mother-in-law’s house wasn’t enough to convince Ms Coates to grant bail.

She said while the man didn’t have a significant criminal history, his behaviour was “incredibly bizarre and concerning”.

Ms Coates refused bail, saying the man posed a risk to his partner.

The matter was adjourned to July 31 at Holland Park Magistrates Court.
