A PROBE into an underworld killing has led police to a hidden hoard of more than $1 million in suspected drug money.

The hunt for the killer of Julian Neuendorf took a twist when detectives uncovered the loot in two hideaways.

The cash stash will be forfeited to the state if found to be connected to serious crime, in a windfall for government coffers.

Neuendorf was murdered in an execution-style hit and his bullet-riddled body dumped in the Logan River in November.

The Sunday Mail can reveal detectives from Operation Kilo Alaska investigating the murder have conducted a series of raids.

The former residence of a Neuendorf associate was searched on November 13. Police discovered four vacuum-sealed packages containing caustic soda inside a go-cart trailer at the man's residence. The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, allegedly admitted sealing the bags but said the substance was an unknown cleaning agent from a concreting friend.

Five days later, on November 18, police searched an Everton Self Storage locker allegedly rented in the man's name. Drug chemicals and glassware, ammunition and steroids were allegedly found in the locker. A small stash of ecstasy, speed and cash was also allegedly discovered at man's home.

The man was charged on November 19 with offences including drug production and possession, but the discoveries had only just started.

On December 8, police searched a Storage King Cleveland shed rented in the name of the man's mother. The shed allegedly contained $431,805 in cash packed in vacuum-sealed bags, and a double-barrel shot gun, 9mm pistol, ammunition and two Breitling watches.

On May 15, police confirmed Neuendorf and the associate each held a safety deposit box at private storage facility Reserve Vault Australia in Brisbane's CBD. A small amount of collectable coins were found in Neuendorf's safe before police allegedly discovered $748,250 in cash in the man's safe.

The cash was made up of $50 and $100 notes bundled into 15 packages, wrapped in newspaper.

CCTV footage allegedly showed a person matching the man's description removing about 20 bundles from the safe in April.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission alleges the man in question has engaged in "serious crime related activities'', namely drug production.

The CMC has applied to the Supreme Court for the money to be forfeited, documenting the circumstances behind the seizures.

It's the latest big cash discovery for police, helping offset the high cost of drug investigations.

In a separate case, $4.1 million in cash was found in suitcases in a storage shed at West End in October, alongside firearms, drugs and a Taser.

Neuendorf had a history of convictions for drugs and violence but his family made a tearful plea for anyone with information to assist police.

The case is one in a wave of recent unsolved murders connected to Queensland's drug trade.
