A much-loved southside kindy has been earmarked to be moved or demolished to make way for a new indoor sports complex which will be used as a training venue for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Logan Central’s Deadly Kindy Burragah was named in a state government document approving proposed amendments to regulations under the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games Arrangements Act, to ensure Brisbane is prepared as a host of the international event.

The kindergarten will make way for the new Logan Indoor Sports Centre, following the Amendment Regulation, which was published online and tabled in state parliament on Thursday.

The Amendment Regulation prescribes the Logan Indoor Sports Centre as an official Games venue and highlights the “significant” investment and collaborative efforts between the state and federal governments.

The sports venue, for badminton, basketball, futsal, netball, and volleyball, will be built on Democracy Way at Logan Central, near Logan City Council chambers.

It will be the third indoor Olympic venue with Moreton City Council’s $205 million centre to be completed in 2028 at Mill Precinct in Petrie, and an indoor stadium to be built on state government land at Chandler.

Documents attached to the Amendment Regulation said Deadly Kindy Burragah was on part of the site where the Logan Indoor Sports Centre is proposed to be built.

“The facility where the kindergarten is currently occupied is planned to be demolished as part of the project,” it read.

“Deadly Kindy Burragah will likely need to relocate to another facility before construction can begin.

“An approach to manage the relocation of Deadly Kindy Burragah and other affected parties will be implemented to ensure disruptions to their operations are minimised.”

Deadly Kindy Burragah, which is managed by ATSICHS, did not return calls or answer emails.

The decision to demolish buildings along Jacaranda Ave at Logan Central for the sports centre has raised concerns among some locals.

The kindergarten, known for its cultural significance and contributions to early childhood education, will need to find a new location before construction can commence.

In documents approving the Logan amendment, former State Development Minister Grace Grace acknowledged the potential impacts on current users of the site and said the government was committed to managing the relocation process to minimise disruptions.

“Disruption of existing communities is a recognised risk in any significant development project,” Ms Grace said.

“As the Logan Indoor Sports Centre consists of building on a site which has existing users, it is anticipated that community groups, some of which may be formed on the basis of cultural connection and practices, will be impacted if displaced during the development of this venue.”

The Logan Indoor Sports Centre will feature nine indoor courts across two halls, complete with supporting change facilities, amenities, and functional spaces.

The amendment document said while primarily designated for training during the Games, the facility will be versatile enough to host competition events if necessary.

The regulation empowers the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games Authority to develop the venue, aligning with the state’s obligations under the Olympic Host Contract.

Ms Grace said the development would comply with the state’s legal frameworks, including considerations for human rights and cultural heritage.

She said the design would incorporate principles of connecting with country, respecting the cultural heritage and knowledge of traditional custodians, and promoting cultural rights.

The Logan Indoor Sports Centre was identified in the Queensland Government’s March 2024 response to the independent Sport Venue Review as a critical venue for the Games, despite not being included in initial Brisbane Olympic designs.
