Queensland dog rescue DARE has been forced to close after medical costs for surrendered dogs exceeded more than $26,000. Sharing the emotional announcement on their Facebook page last night, the charity has been left out-of-pocket after dogs were surrendered without disclosing severe medical and behavioural issues.

“We will have to sadly close our doors until we can get at least 30 dogs adopted which will temporarily cover our $26,200 bill,” the post read.

“We made a promise we would stay ethical and we continue to maintain that. It comes with an economical price tag that is suffocating.

“We choose to not sell puppies for $2000+ as we aren’t a puppy mill posing as a charity, we want animals to be affordable to the public. We compensate by giving up time with our families by doing back to back weekend sausage sizzles, shows, markets, fundraisers and expos to raise the money ourselves.”

Comprised of a group of volunteers and a registered nurse, DARE was launched in 2020 as a no-kill rescue focused on providing assistance to at-risk dogs.

Recent surrenders of dogs requiring emergency dental repairs, MRIs, heartworm treatment, investigative surgery for anal fissures and repairing torn ACLs has left the non-profit unable to remain open.

You can support the rescue by donating your refund at Containers for Change to member number: C10234391 or by donating to the DARE GoFundMe account.
