Two men who were trapped in a ravine in a remote Western Downs national park for more than 16 hours have been rescued in an operation which lasted two days.

Only one of the hikers was injured in the ordeal, which left two men stranded in a ravine overnight near the Starkvale camping area in the Expedition National Park.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the incident near Robinson Gorge Rd in Glenhaughton, through an EPIRB activation, just before 1pm on Monday, May 20.

“It’s a good message to people to bring (an EPIRB) when they go hiking,” the spokeswoman said.

The rescue effort kicked off on Monday afternoon, but was suspended due to poor light.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency services spokesman said the men had enough resources to be able to camp for the night, while they awaited rescue.

The rescue in the national park relaunched on Tuesday morning.

A QFES spokesman said the rescue effort was complex, conducted by the Taroom SES in two stages.

The spokesman said the hikers were two ledges down in the ravine.

He said the SES first hauled the men up halfway, and later hauled the men the rest of the way. The rescue was complete at 11.40am.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said one of the men reportedly had a minor head injury, while the other was uninjured.

The spokeswoman confirmed no one was taken to hospital.
