A traffic accident caused by a man who didn’t check where he was going before crashing into another vehicle was all it took for him to land on the police’s radar.

Jack Oscar Antonio appeared at Dalby Magistrates Court on May 16 for a string of driving and drug-related charges.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the 20-year-old was responsible for crashing into a stationary vehicle on Cunningham St in Dalby when he reversed out without checking all his mirrors on April 11.

“The driver of the other car said they had reversed out prior to (Antonio) and were waiting to take a safe passage when he crashed into him,” Sergeant Brady said.

On a separate occasion at Newtown, police conducting patrols found Antonio, who lives in Millmerran, in his parked car.

“Police were aware he was involved in other matters,” Sergeant Brady said.

“They observed a knife in the jumper pocket and he was detained for a search.

“(Police) further located ammunition, he stated it was his step-fathers who was a licence holder.”

The court was told police also found multiple clip seal bags for cannabis, and found a pipe and scales.

In a third incident, police spotted Antonio driving in an “erratic” fashion which resulted in authorities searching the vehicle.

Upon the search, the court was told he was found with less than 3g of marijuana, less than 1g of meth and a pipe that was used for smoking meth.

Defence lawyer Chris Neville said his client, who was supported by his stepdad in court, could continue to work for his family’s contracting business without a licence and reported the man “does not” have an alcohol or drug problem.

Magistrate Kyna Morice emphasised the number of offences the man had before court.

“They probably wouldn’t have come to light without traffic offences,” she said.

“You’ve certainly accumulated a number at once. Because of the sheer number of offences you are very close to not receiving fines, do you understand that?”

Antonio pleaded guilty to 11 offences which included two counts of possessing drugs, two counts of contravening a requirement by police, two counts of driving without a licence, two counts of possessing utensils and one count each of failing to give way to a vehicle, explosives, having a knife in public.

He was fined $1500 in total and disqualified from driving for one month. No conviction was recorded.
