‘Disgraceful’: Funding for Australian road upgrades not being spent appropriately

A 78-year-old driver has been issued a large fine after police detected him driving 50km/h over the speed limit at Guluguba.

Chinchilla Police on Saturday, September 28 recorded the Ford Territory travelling 150km/h in a 100km/h zone along the Leichardt Highway just before 6pm.

The driver, who was pinged by a mobile radar, was issued a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h, a $1854 fine and deducted eight demerit points.

Sergeant Isaiah Reich urged motorists to drive safely.

“It is not just your life that you are putting at risk, travelling at those kinds of speeds endangers the lives of every other person on the road,” he said in a press release.

“Driving at a high speed reduces your reaction time and ability to stop quickly, and there can be catastrophic consequences as a result.”

Police data showed that the number and severity of crashes could be significantly reduced when drivers avoided the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviours of speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue and distraction.
