A man put on probation only two weeks ago has blamed a recent break-up after he fronted court again for a wild theft spree from Toowoomba to Oakey and ended in Dalby.

Kyle James Easton appeared in Dalby Magistrates Court on October 27 and hung his head as police prosecutor Chris Hutchins read out the details of his seven-day crime spree.

The court heard on October 20 the 21-year-old took the Toyota CHR of a 65-year-old woman when it was parked outside her work at St Vincent’s Hospital in East Toowoomba.

Sergeant Hutchins said that days later Easton and a friend were seen loitering outside a woman’s shed in Oakey smoking.

“A neighbour asked the males what they were doing and they said they’d been given permission by the property owner and remained there,” he said.

The court heard the pair left an hour and a half later and when arrested admitted they didn’t have permission to be at the property.

The following day the pair were busted attempting to break into a Dalby home, with the Toyota CHR parked at the front now painted over with black spray paint.

“(Police) observed a man in the driver’s seat and was arrested, the other ran away but was caught after a short foot chase,” Sergeant Hutchins said.

The court heard the crime spree continued as Easton stole a bag containing Airpods, a laptop, keys and work documents from a Dalby man’s car, power tools from another and bank cards from the centre console of a 19-year-old woman’s car that same evening.

“Police recovered a number of items from the vehicle, and found drugs in a vial alleged to be (fantasy),” Sergeant Hutchins said.

Defence lawyer Julia Molloy said her client claimed he was adversely affected by drugs at the time of the crime spree and has been using drugs heavily since a recent break up.

“He’s supported by his family who knew he wasn’t coping well,” she said.

“(His mum) said she can’t recognise the behaviour she’s seeing from him, as being her son.”

Magistrate Kerrie O’Callaghan emphasised the damage caused from the wild theft spree.

“It was stressful for the victims who have to deal with the aftermath of their property stolen,” she said.

“The heart of this is addressing your use of drugs.”

Easton pleaded guilty to four counts of entering a premises to steal, unlawful use of a vehicle, wilful damage, possession of drugs, possessing utensils related to drugs and possessing property suspected of being stolen.

He was sentenced to jail for one month, wholly suspended for six months, and forfeiture of all the seized items was ordered.
