A woman with a history of assaults was back before court again after she lunged at her brother’s ex-girlfriend with a knife in an attempt to “scare” her.

Jasmine Helen Patricia Haase appeared at Dalby Magistrates Court on June 20 after getting into a verbal argument with the victim which soon turned serious when she brought a weapon into the mix.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said on January 27 the victim, who resided with Haase at an address in Hillcrest, reported hearing the defendant yelling from another room.

“(The victim) realised it was directed at her, (Haase) called her a ‘s--t’ and barged into the room,” Sergeant Brady said.

The court was told the pair argued before Haase left to get a “silver chef’s knife” and upon returning, held it towards the victim’s chest then lunged at her while standing about 1m away.

“(The victim) put her arm out to stop her before taking the knife,” Sergeant Brady said.

Defence lawyer Michael McElhinney said his client, a 35-year-old mother of four children, was living with her 19-year-old brother at the time and he had become “very angry and depressed” over an alleged affair his ex-girlfriend had prior to the assault.

“It seems the victim was cheating on (Haase’s) brother and she had in fact moved her new male friend into the house,” Mr McElhinney said.

“She lost her temper. It seems she was trying to scare and threaten the victim.”

Magistrate Kyna Morice questioned the Dalby woman about her criminal history due to three previous common assault charges and asked about the assault charge from 2020.

Mr McElhinney said his client had been in a neighbourly dispute when she put her hands around the victim’s neck when explaining the prior assault charge.

“I was just being a cheeky c--t,” Haase said.

Ms Morice interjected, “Please don’t use that language”.

The magistrate continued to tell Haase that while her actions were out of protection for her brother they were “ill directed”.

“You can’t wave knives at people,” Ms Morice said.

“Perhaps you were trying to scare her but if you had even without intention cut her hand, you would find yourself with a far more serious charge.”

Haase pleaded guilty to one count of common assault and failing to surrender into custody.

She was sentenced to six months’ probation.
