Dalby electrician revealed as carjacking, shooting victim as offenders face court

A Dalby and Toowoomba man have fronted court on Friday, charged with attempted murder after a man was shot during a shocking morning carjacking.

Two men accused of attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man in the groin before stealing his car have faced court, with their alleged victim identified as a Dalby tradesman.

Police allege about 8.30am Thursday two men, 34-year-old Dean Edward Charles Cubby and 31-year-old Jeffery Alexander Ward-Sinclair, shot a 23-year-old electrician in the groin on a suburban street after he refused to hand over the keys to his work ute outside a Glen Eagles Drive residence.

Police charged the two men with attempted murder after they were arrested after a full-scale pursuit along one of Toowoomba’s busiest streets on Thursday afternoon.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said an altercation broke out after the electrician refused to comply with the alleged offender’s demands and the victim was shot during the scuffle.

The victim was taken to Dalby Hospital by his co-worker before being flown to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.

Police described the injuries as non-life threatening.

Mr Sinclair, a Dalby man, has been charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of weapons and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Mr Cubby, a Toowoomba man, is charged with one count each of armed robbery, attempted murder, unlawful possession of weapons, unlawful use of a vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle and possessing utensils.

Detectives investigate after a tradesman was shot by car thieves in Dalby before driving to Toowoomba.

The two alleged offenders appeared in Oakey Magistrates Court on Friday morning.

Claire Graham of Skuse Graham Lawyers appeared on behalf of Mr Cubby and requested a full brief of evidence.

Ms Graham also appeared as town agent on behalf of McConnell and Saldumbide Criminal Lawyers for Mr Cubby’s alleged co-accused Mr Ward-Sinclair.

Again, she asked for a full brief of evidence to be provided to the respective defence teams by June 16.

Magistrate Kay Ryan made the order for the briefs and adjourned both defendants’ matters to Dalby Magistrates Court on June 27.

Neither man was required to appear in court and there was no application for bail.

Before their dramatic arrest the alleged offenders struck a motorcyclist in his 20s at the intersection of James and West streets in Toowoomba where the paramedics treated the motorcyclist for minor injuries.

Two men have been arrested after they allegedly carjacked an electrician in Dalby and shot him in the groin and led police on a chase to Toowoomba in a stolen Mitsubishi Triton ute. They were arrested at the corner of West Street and O'Quinn Street, about 10am, May 11, 2023.

Darling Downs Inspector Jason Kitto said police acted quick to apprehend the alleged offenders.

“It was good work by police on the ground in Dalby, the surrounding areas in Toowoomba who responded quickly,” he said.

Inspector Kitto asked for anyone who has dashcam footage or information about the offence to come forward to police.
