Chinchilla drug driver faces Dalby Magistrates Court after he was busted impersonating cops on a Western Downs road

A Western Downs father was busted pretending to be police by using red and blue flashing lights on his car while overtaking other vehicles on a busy Dalby road.

A drug driver ousted himself for a string of traffic offences after he drew attention to himself by using police-like flashing lights on his car along a busy Dalby road.

Concerned road users contacted police after they saw Kurtis David Chalk driving a car along Jandowae Rd with blue and red flashing lights on his dashboard, overtaking other cars on October 20 last year.

Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins told Dalby Magistrates Court police located the 26-year-old and found a light bar with “similar appearance to police lights”.

“He said to police he didn’t realise it was a big deal,” Sergeant Hutchins said.

Defence lawyer Joe McConnell said his client claimed a friend had brought the light bar to his house the evening before.

“He acknowledges it was extremely foolish,” Mr McConnell said.

“It was in his vehicle and for whatever reason, out of immaturity perhaps he decided to use the lights in order to take over another vehicle.”

During the search, the court was told police also found an empty clip seal bag and after conducting a drug test, he presented a positive reading for meth.

“All the charges stem from the poor decision of using the lights,” Mr McConnell said.

The court was told that three months after impersonating police, the man was busted again for drug driving while on a street in Chinchilla.

Magistrate Kyna Morice accepted the man had challenges with drugs over the years due to personal reasons.

“In regards to impersonating a public officer, I accept it was nothing more than a foolish decision, which you probably felt more severely with the domino effect it had,” she said.

Chalk pleaded guilty to one count of impersonating a public officer, possessing property suspected of having been used with the commission of a drug offence and two counts of drug driving.

He was fined a total of $1400 and disqualified from driving for three months for the first drug driving offence and received one month disqualification for the second drug driving offence.

Convictions were recorded for the traffic offences, however no conviction was recorded for the criminal offence.
