A 30-year-old Dalby man who went on a wild midnight rampage while rambling about his cat has appeared in court for his slew of offences.
Alexander Albert Simpson fronted court from prison on Wednesday, pleading guilty to nine offences including evasion at night, two dangerous operations of a motor vehicle, drink driving, wilful damage and assaulting police stemming from an incident on December 14, 2024.
The court was told on the night of the offending Simpson, who was homeless and living in Bowenville Reserve, became agitated when after a messy break-up his ex-partner had taken his cat.
Drinking heavily, Simpson got behind the wheel of his car and began loudly revving the engine at midnight, disturbing families at the camping ground who asked him to stop.
In response Simpson began hurling abuse at the innocent campers, turned his music up and began driving erratically around the reserve.
Simpson then drunkenly smashed into the back of a parked car, causing $1000 worth of damage to the rear bumper and exhaust.
He then threw a beer can at the owner of the car before driving off onto the Warrego Highway.
Police attempted to intercept Simpson who was speeding west down the highway but terminated the chase after two minutes.
Police took up their pursuit in Dalby where they observed Simpson travelling 90km/h in a 60km/h zone along Drayton St.
Driving erratically, Simpson drove through a red light, almost collided with pedestrians and took to the back roads where he was seen speeding down the wrong side of the road.
Simpson then parked outside the address of his ex-partner’s aunty’s house.
After speeding off again plain clothes police waited for him to return before arresting him.
Simpson’s rampage didn’t stop there however, as he headbutted one of the officers in the face before being taken to the ground and restrained.
Back at the station about 1.43am Simpson refused to leave the vehicle and had to be dragged out head butting a second officer and breaking their chest flashlight.
Police were unable to breath test Simpson due to his agitated state and he spent the night in the padded cells where he kicked the walls and screamed abuse.
Magistrate Kathleen Payne scolded Simpson.
“You’re a mature age man carrying on about a cat,” she said.
“What a disgraceful display of conduct”.
Simpson was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with 168 days of pre-sentence custody declared as time served and he was immediately released on parole.
He also received a two year loss of licence and a conviction was recorded.
