Homes under threat and water bombers called in as grass fire takes hold in Dalby

Nearly 20 Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to a fire near Bell, which broke out as firefighters battled a blaze threatening properties near Dalby.

Emergency Services were on Monday battling two large grass fires threatening structures in the Western Downs.

About a dozen Queensland Fire and Emergency Services scrambled to contain a grass fire that was threatening homes on Dalby’s eastern fringe.

A QFES spokeswoman said crews were called to the incident near the intersection of the Warrego Highway and Dalby-Cecil Plains Road about 1pm on Monday.

The fire was threatening several structures and water bombers were called in.

It destroyed a high-voltage power pole and electricians had been called in to make the scene safe.

QFES issued a Watch and Act alert for properties between Galaxy Drive, Sandalwood Avenue East and Dalby Cecil Plains Road, as well as Riders Road, telling residents to prepare to leave. This was later revised down to a “return with caution” advice level alert.

The fire was burning near Riders Road and is travelling towards Dalby Cecil Plains Road.

Police were putting road blocks in place along the Dalby-Cecil Plains Road and Warrego Highway.

Emergency services were going door-to-door to check on homes and structures near the fireground.

A second fire took hold at Bell, near the intersection of Bradley Road and Bell-Kaimkillenbun Road.

It is understood the fire destroyed a shed and a vehicle, along some cattle yards at a property on Bradley Road.

About 17 QFES crews were working to contain it, and it is understood at least one structure was on fire.

A prepare to leave alert was issued for properties between the Bunya Highway, Fullagars Road, Bell-Kaimkillenbun Road, Johnstones Road and Koondaini Weir Access Road, including Glencoe Road. This was also downgraded to a “return with caution” advice level alert.

The fire had earlier been described as fast moving and travelling towards Bell-Kaimkillenbun Road and Koondaii Road.
